Concierge Elder Care: A Personalized Approach to Preserving Health, Independence, and Dignity

Cognitive decline is unpredictable. Subtle shifts, missed appointments, confusion, behavioral changes, can escalate quickly, disrupting independence and family harmony. For families accustomed to excellence and precision, standard care is no longer sufficient.

Concierge care provides a strategic, proactive solution: Through personalized oversight, concierge care anticipates needs, prevents crises, and seamlessly integrates medical, social, and lifestyle priorities. As a result, families enjoy a framework that ensures discretion, efficiency, and lasting peace of mind.

Concierge Elder Care: Personalized Oversight That Sees Every Detail

Unlike traditional care, concierge services centralize every element of support.

Cognitive health monitoring: Early detection of changes in memory, reasoning, or behavior.

Medication and medical management: Ensures accuracy, adherence, and timely adjustments.

Daily routine and lifestyle coordination: Aligns activities with cognitive and physical capabilities.

Continuous updates: Families are informed proactively, not reactively.

Every decision is assessed for value and necessity. Are aides fully optimized? Are appointments streamlined to prevent redundancy? This ensures resources are efficient while maintaining premium quality of life.

Anticipating Needs Before They Arise

Cognitive decline doesn’t wait. Delays in care can lead to preventable crises, hospitalizations, or accelerated deterioration. Concierge elder care uses advanced planning, professional expertise, and meticulous observation to anticipate changes before they escalate.

If your parent is experiencing cognitive changes and you want a proactive strategy, ElderMaze offers private consultations to guide families through early engagement, planning, and execution.
Learn more at www.eldermaze.com or call (412) 486-6677.

Beyond Medical Management: A Holistic Perspective

True concierge care goes further than health oversight:

Social engagement: Structured opportunities to remain connected and stimulated.

Mental fitness: Personalized activities that challenge cognition and preserve independence.

Emotional well-being: Strategies that reduce stress, anxiety, and isolation.

By integrating these elements, families preserve not only physical safety but quality of life, confidence, and dignity.

Why High-Performing Families Choose Concierge Care

Executives, public figures, and high-net-worth families face unique challenges:

Limited time to oversee care directly.

Sensitivity around private health matters.

Desire for proactive, anticipatory solutions that maintain family involvement without stress.

Concierge elder care empowers families to delegate operational responsibilities while retaining strategic control. Decisions are informed, timely, and aligned with values, ensuring that your loved one’s care never compromises discretion or quality.

Structured, Expert Support That Eases Family Burden

Even for families with abundant resources, long-term cognitive decline can feel overwhelming. Moreover, emotional strain, sibling conflicts, and nonstop decision-making often erode well-being. Fortunately, concierge elder care mitigates these challenges by offering:

Structured support and planning.

Objective, expert guidance.

Peace of mind through discrete, professional oversight.

Concierge care doesn’t replace family involvement; instead, it amplifies it with precision, foresight, and steady, confident guidance.

Moving Forward With Confidence

Long-term cognitive decline demands more than good intentions; it requires expert orchestration. Concierge elder care transforms uncertainty into clarity, stress into strategy, and risk into managed outcomes.

For families who demand excellence, discretion, and comprehensive oversight, professional concierge elder care is the ultimate safeguard.

MCT Oil for Dementia Support: When Margaret noticed her father struggling with short-term memory loss and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, she began exploring dietary approaches that could complement his treatment plan. Among the most discussed options were coconut oil and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. Families are often drawn to these oils for their potential role in ketone metabolism, providing an alternative energy source for neurons that may be struggling due to impaired glucose uptake in the brain.

While these oils are not curative, emerging research suggests they may offer neuroprotective effects, support cerebral energy metabolism, and improve aspects of cognitive function in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia syndromes.

Mechanisms: How Coconut and MCT Oils Support Cognitive Function

Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are rapidly absorbed and metabolized in the liver into ketone bodies, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone. These ketones can cross the blood-brain barrier and provide an alternative fuel source for neurons when glucose metabolism is impaired, a common feature in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

MCT Oil for Dementia Support: Potential benefits observed include:

Enhanced synaptic function: Ketone utilization may support neurotransmission in compromised neural circuits.

Reduction in oxidative stress: Ketones may decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce neuronal damage.

Improved cognitive clarity: Some studies suggest modest improvements in attention, memory recall, and executive function.

Safety, Reactions, and Medical Considerations

While generally considered safe, MCT and coconut oils carry potential risks, especially in older adults with comorbidities:

Gastrointestinal Effects: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, and bloating may occur, particularly when introduced abruptly.

Allergic Reactions: Rarely, urticaria (hives), pruritus (itching), angioedema, or respiratory symptoms may appear. Seek immediate medical care if severe reactions occur.

Metabolic Considerations: High intake may influence serum lipid levels and triglycerides. Those with hyperlipidemia, hepatic dysfunction, or pancreatic insufficiency should proceed cautiously.

Medication Interactions: MCT oils may affect absorption of lipophilic drugs; consult a physician when the individual is on multiple medications.

Warning Signs Requiring Medical Attention:

Persistent diarrhea or vomiting leading to dehydration

Signs of hypersensitivity (swelling, difficulty breathing)

Significant weight change or unexplained fatigue

MCT Oil for Dementia Support: Practical Approaches for Safe Use

Start Small: Begin with 0.5–1 teaspoon of MCT oil per day, increasing gradually based on tolerance.

Incorporate Into Food: Blend into smoothies, soups, or sauces. Use coconut oil for moderate-heat cooking or baking.

Observe and Document: Track cognitive changes, mood, and gastrointestinal tolerance.

Coordinate with Healthcare Providers: Always consult a physician or registered dietitian before introducing oils, particularly for individuals with cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, or chronic kidney disease.

Integrating Oils Into Holistic Dementia Care

Coconut and MCT oils are most effective when combined with:

Cognitive stimulation: Memory exercises, reading, or problem-solving activities.

Physical activity: Low-impact exercise improves circulation, metabolic health, and mood.

Social engagement: Interaction with family, friends, or community groups enhances emotional well-being.

Clinical monitoring: Regular check-ups for cognitive function, metabolic health, and cardiovascular risk factors.

MCT Oil for Dementia Support: A Real-Life Example

Margaret began with a teaspoon of MCT oil blended into her father’s morning smoothie. Within weeks, he appeared more alert, engaged in conversation more frequently, and experienced fewer moments of disorientation. By tracking both cognitive and gastrointestinal responses, she adjusted the dosage safely under her physician’s supervision. The oils became a complementary tool, supporting energy metabolism and offering a sense of proactive engagement in his care.

A Path Through Loneliness in Older Adults

Reflective Meditation: When we think of loneliness in later life, it’s often reduced to numbers, social contacts, visits, or living arrangements. Yet for Eleanor, James, Clara, and Ahmed, loneliness was deeply personal, touching every corner of their lives.

Reflective meditation became more than a practice; it became a lifeline, a way to reclaim presence, restore connection, and cultivate calm amid isolation.

Reflective Meditation: Finding Calm in Solitude

Eleanor, 79, lost her husband and felt the silence of home acutely. Beginning with just five minutes of reflective meditation each morning, she noticed subtle shifts: sunlight on her hands, birdsong, and the rhythm of her breath. That presence transformed her solitude into a space for reflection and emotional restoration.

From Isolation to Community

James, 78, struggled with social loss after retirement. Joining a reflective meditation group initially felt intimidating but soon provided a space for attentive presence and shared focus. Through practice, James observed his emotions without judgment, opening the door to renewed friendships and social connection.

Transforming Pain into Presence

Clara, 82, faced chronic pain and isolation. Meditation offered a portable refuge: a few minutes to scan her body, release tension, and acknowledge discomfort without self-criticism. Journaling afterward allowed her to share insights with her grandchildren, strengthening intergenerational bonds.

Ahmed: Breathing Through Anxiety

Ahmed, 75, dealt with post-stroke anxiety and physical limitations. Meditation helped him regain calm, observe emotions, and respond with patience. Over time, he experienced reduced stress and improved engagement with family and caregivers.

Lessons from These Stories

Reflective meditation fosters:

Self-awareness and compassion: Observing emotions without judgment.

Emotional resilience: Reducing stress and isolation.

Enhanced connection: Strengthening social bonds.

Empowerment: Tools for older adults to manage inner life and improve quality of life.

Practical Steps to Begin Reflective Meditation

Short, Daily Sessions: Even five minutes can be transformative.

Focus on Breath: Anchor attention to inhalation and exhalation.

Body Awareness: Scan sensations, release tension, cultivate presence.

Group Engagement: Join classes or online sessions for social connection.

Start Your Reflective Meditation Journey Today

Loneliness in older adults is real, but meditation offers a path to calm, connection, and growth. Begin daily practice, explore community sessions, and share mindfulness with loved ones. Each reflective breath can transform solitude into presence and meaning.

Preventing Dehydration in Seniors: Hydration is often overlooked in discussions of elder care, yet it is one of the most fundamental factors in maintaining health, clarity, and quality of life. For older adults, the risks of dehydration are higher, and the consequences more serious. Understanding how to prevent, recognize, and address dehydration is essential for families and caregivers who wish to preserve both well-being and independence.

Here are eight essential questions every family should consider:

1. Why are seniors more vulnerable to dehydration?

As we age, the body’s natural signals for thirst and fluid balance change. Additionally, kidney function declines, medications affect fluid retention, and mobility or cognitive challenges can limit access to water, all of which increase the risk of dehydration.

2. What are the early warning signs?

Often, subtle cues precede severe consequences. For example, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, reduced urine output, or changes in mental alertness may indicate the need for more attentive hydration.

3. How does dehydration impact cognition and behavior?

Even mild dehydration can affect concentration, memory, mood, and decision-making. Therefore, recognizing these changes early can prevent them from being misinterpreted as cognitive decline or behavioral shifts.

4. Preventing Dehydration in Seniors: What are the common causes beyond fluid intake?

Fever, infections, gastrointestinal disturbances, and certain medications can increase fluid loss. Understanding these factors helps families respond proactively rather than reactively.

5. How much fluid do seniors actually need?

Fluid requirements vary with health status, climate, and activity levels. Experts recommend personalized strategies rather than one-size-fits-all guidelines to ensure adequate hydration without overwhelming the individual.

6. Preventing Dehydration in Seniors: What role do diet and environment play?

Foods with high water content—fruits, vegetables, soups—can supplement hydration. Environmental factors such as heat, humidity, and physical activity also influence fluid needs. Awareness of these dynamics helps families anticipate challenges.

7. How can caregivers encourage hydration without creating resistance?

Hydration strategies should respect individual autonomy and preferences. For instance, options can include flavor-infused water, scheduled reminders, or incorporating fluids into meals. Approaches that preserve dignity and choice are more successful than forceful interventions.

8. When should medical attention be sought?

Severe dehydration, confusion, rapid heart rate, or low blood pressure require immediate evaluation. Families should have clear guidelines for recognizing urgent situations to act decisively without delay.

Herbalism and Western Allopathic medicine may seem at times in odds with each other, but in fact they work extremely well together to increase the possibilities of healing. Most herbs do not interfere with the actions of drugs and can be used to enhance or support allopathic treatments. Our bodies recognize and utilize the medicine in plants simply because we have evolved together for millions of years.

Arnica is a perfect example of a natural remedy and gentile topical treatment to soothe muscles, reduce inflammation and heal wounds. Arnica (Arnica montana) is a perennial herb found in East Asia, Europe, the northern United States, and Canada and has been used for medicinal purposes since the 1500s.

Medicinal Uses and Indications

Arnica is used topically for a wide range of conditions, including:

Bruises

Fevers

Inflammation

Osteoarthritis

Pain

Skin disorders

Sprains

Burns

Sore muscles

“Rejuvenated in my recovery I praise this herb most highly, yet in truth it is nature who praises herself, she who is truly inexhaustible, who creates this flower with its healing powers, and in doing so once more proclaims herself to be eternally procreative.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, on Arnica after it relieved his severe chest pains (due to a heart condition which eventually took his life). Goethe credited Arnica with saving his life so that he could write the second volume of his autobiography.

In his book, Homeopathic Treatment of Sports Injuries, Dr. Lyle Morgan states: “Arnica should be considered first in all cases of physical injury.” He lists Arnica’s benefits throughout the book, including: “Arnica works quickly to repair damaged blood vessels, to reduce swelling at the site of the injury, and to eliminate pain.”

In his book, Musculoskeletal Healing, homeopath Asa Hershoff states:“Arnica is the most renowned trauma remedy, and is without equal as the primary remedy for injury of any kind whatsoever.”

Post fall older adult leg, all x rays were negative and RICE was the only treatment prescribed. This is prior to Arnica treatment.

Anyone working with older adults can confirm the devastating effects a simple fall with post bruising can cause for an older adult. They become non-ambulatory, often leading to staying in a wheelchair for safety and institutionalized. In searching for a remedy to prevent this decline, I discovered Arnica, and decided to make a salve of organic, chemical free Arnica for our older adult clients. Bruises (or what medical doctors call “contusions”) occur when you get injured and break tiny blood vessels in the skin. These blood vessels or “capillaries”, leak into the surrounding tissue and as red blood cells gather, you can see discoloration in the area. What starts off as a red-purple injury becomes green or yellow as the body works to heal the region and metabolize or gobble up the mass of escaped red blood cells.

2 weeks post Arnica treatment 2 times a day, within a month there was no signs of bruising or hard tissue

Despite all their falls, young children bruise less readily as they have resilient blood vessels that don’t break easily. Older people, especially those on certain medications, have delicate vessels; some find black and blue marks so frequently that they are forever wondering where the injuries come from and what it was they last bumped into. Medications that prevent blood clotting (like Coumadin) and prescription drugs that make blood vessels more fragile (like Prednisone) often contribute to the number of bruises one has. Frequently, the body will wall off the region instead of sending cells in to do the clean up work. When this occurs the blood pools and the area swells and becomes tender. If calcium is deposited, a bony condition called myositis ossificans can occur and the tissue becomes sensitive to touch and hard. The natural chemicals found in Arnica help to heal or prevent these unwanted complications. Flavonoids decrease the permeability of the blood vessels and polysaccharideas stimulate the process by which helper-cells clean the tissue of unwanted debris.

Even with the utmost caution, accidents will happen at home, on the field, in the gym, and in the workplace. However, with Arnica on hand and these tips in mind, you can speed the healing and prevent long-term disability that often accompanies bruises and physical trauma. So be sure to have a supply of Arnica in your kitchen cabinet, desk drawer, purse and gym bag. Then, you too will be able to experience the beneficial healing effects that Arnica has provided since mountain climbers discovered it centuries ago.

Organic Dried Arnica Montana

How I prepare Arnica – Pain Remedy From Nature

I purchase organic Arnica Montana, since it is native to the Mountains of Europe and Asia preferring higher elevations and not able to be grown in my backyard in Pittsburgh.

Organic Coconut oil for mixing

For mixing other remedies, I always have on hand Organic Coconut oil.

Step 1:

Heat the organic coconut oil to melt; I use a small electric fondue pot to make all my salve’s.

Step 2:

Add the Arnica Montana dried flowers and leave to cook for 48-72 hours. The Arnica flowers will diffuse into the coconut oil, changing it to a light brown color. The oil is a solvent for the medicinal properties of the herb and provides a healing, emollient base.

Step 3:

After 72 hours, I allow the Arnica infused oil to cool so that I can touch it. Then I use a cheesecloth draped over a pan to strain out the arnica infused coconut oil, squeezing the excess oil out and discarding the flowers into my compost heap.

Step 4:

I then place the arnica infused coconut oil back into the electric fondue pot and slowly add the organic Beeswax pellets which adds a soothing, protective quality and provides the firmness needed to form a salve. This is heated until the beeswax is completely melted. To check for proper consistency, I dip a spoon into the mixture and pull it out immediately to test the consistency. If it is too soft, I add more beeswax.

Step 5:

Once the consistency is just right, I allow the Arnica infused organic coconut oil mixed with the beeswax to cool for about 5 minutes. I then add 2 types of organic essential oils that also have anti inflammatory properties and blend them into the mixture. I then infuse each container with Reiki energy from the universe to offer additional healing properties. Next, I pour the mixture into 2 oz. and 4 oz. containers and place a lid on immediately. It will form into a salve consistency in less than 5 minutes. If placed in a cool environment (like air conditioning) the salve will form a harder consistency. Just remove some of of the salve and warm it in your hand to regain the salve consistency.

This organic Arnica is available for purchase at our office. The 2 oz. container is $10 and the 4 oz. is $15. Shipping and handling charges adds an additional $5 – $7.

Insomnia is a relatively common sleeping disorder, affecting about one-third of the adult population worldwide. Insomnia is an inability to fall or stay asleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. About 10 to 15 percent of people suffer from chronic insomnia, failing to get enough shut-eye at least a few nights a week.

Getting to sleep and staying asleep is like solving a personal puzzle; it is different for each person and determining what piece of the puzzle will give you a good night’s rest is crucial to function at your best.

Sleep is an important aspect of all our lives, without it we fall behind and build up harmful chemicals in the brain. Sleep is an important cleanse for our minds that is necessary for our survival. The new year is the perfect time to tackle our bad habits or issues so, this year let’s start with insomnia.

Follow these home remedies to fall asleep naturally and stay asleep as well as promote muscle relaxation.

1. Epson Salt Bath:

Epson salts is made of magnesium sulfate. Besides being a natural muscle relaxant, magnesium helps to regulate blood sugar by assisting cells in producing energy from glucose. Releasing muscle tension is a key element in allowing the body to initiate the relaxation response and because the metabolism-supportive benefits of magnesium help to produce cellular energy, your blood sugar can be better stabilized—this is essential for maintaining balanced hormonal levels that help you sleep.

I recommend adding baking soda, another powerful sleep aid. C02 in baking soda supports healthy REM sleep—which in turn promotes healthy sleep and keeps stress hormones at bay.

You may also want to add a few drops of essential oils of Lavender, Ylang-Ylang or Chamomile to your bath to heighten the relaxing effect and promote sleep.

Don’t have a full tub? Try a foot bath instead!

2. Mindful Meditation:

This is especially helpful if you find your mind racing or preoccupied, which many people with insomnia do. The idea is to continue to redirect your attention to your breathing and your body any time you find yourself lost in thought. When you let thoughts go and simply keep your attention on your breathing, you are better able to welcome sleep. To start your Meditation journey, you may consider one of the below:

Headspace: This App Walks you through your entire mindfulness journey step-by-step

Stop, Breath and Think: This has a specific “Falling Asleep” App

U-Tube Body Scan: Guided Body Scan Meditation for Mind & Body Healing by Michael Sealey

3. Herbs/Supplements:

Valerian (Valerina Officinilas):

Studies cited by the National Institutes of Health report benefits similar to pharmaceutical preparations, such as Xanax, without the side effects. Herbalists use valerian extensively for its sedative action against insomnia, nervousness, and restlessness. It is recommended for those type of people who have a hard time falling asleep, because it shortens sleep latency. It also reduces nighttime waking. You can take Valerian in a tea, tincture form, or oral herbal supplement.

Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis):

As a time-honored sedative herb, chamomile is commonly used for insomnia and restlessness combined with irritability, particularly in children. Chamomile flowers can be consumed in a tea, or Chamomile essential oil can also be put in bath water (5-6 drops), diluted to 2% to make an excellent massage oil, or used as an inhalant.

Wild lettuce:

If you’ve suffered anxiety, headaches, or muscle or joint pain, you might already be familiar with wild lettuce. It’s also effective at calming restlessness and reducing anxiety—and may even quell restless legs syndrome.

Hops (Humulus lupulus):

Beer fans will no doubt be familiar with the calming effect of hops, the flowers used in beer making. In the early 1900’s physicians used hops as a sedative specifically for sleeplessness, nervousness, and restlessness. Hops pillows are sometimes used for mild insomnia.

L-theanine:

This amino acid comes from green tea and not only helps maintain a calm alertness during the day but also a deeper sleep at night.

Melatonin or in its natural state of Cherry Juice:

Cherry juice acts as an amazing natural medicine for sleep. This is because it contains high levels of melatonin, the hormone that helps in regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycles and promoting restful sleep. Melatonin puts the body to sleeping mode by bringing forth drowsiness and lowering the body temperature. Imbalance of the hormone melatonin in the body can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and lead to lack of sleep and Insomnia.

4. Mantram

Mantram is the practice of repeating over and over in the mind certain syllables, words or phrases that help unify consciousness and counteract negative mental states. It is especially helpful for people with restless minds, whose turbulent thoughts keep them from relaxing, concentrating and falling asleep. It is especially useful as an antidote when waking up and your mind starts racing. The repetition of a mantram is a way to calm the body, quiet the mind and to restore the spirit; is a way of focusing the thinking mind and counteracting thoughts that produce anxiety, agitation and unhappiness.

You can practice mantram anywhere, especially as a sleep aid and a natural remedy for insomnia – it is a totally portable technique, requires no training or equipment, and can be used in any circumstance, so long as you don’t practice it while doing something that otherwise requires your undivided attention. Choose a mantram that appeals to you or offers strength, support and is compatible with your religious background and/or spiritual beliefs. Some people have no difficulty choosing a mantram, such as when a word or phrase jumps out at them immediately. Others have to “try it on” and practice repeating it silently for a few days or even weeks, to see how it feels.

List of recommended Mantrams:

Om mani padme hum (Ohm mah-nee pahd-may hume) = An invocation to the jewel (Self), in the lotus of the heart

Namo Butsaya (Nah-mo Boot-see-yah) = I bow to the Buddha

My God and My All = St. Francis of Assisi’s phrase

Kyrie Eleison (Kir-ee-ay Ee-lay-ee-sone) = Lord have mercy

Christe Eleison (Kreest-ay Ee-lay-ee-sone) = Christ have mercy

Hail Mary or Ave Maria = Mother of Jesus

Om Namah Shivaya (Ohm Nah-mah Shee-vah-yah) = Invocation to beauty and fearlessness

Shalom (Shah-lome) = Peace, completeness

Om Prema (Ohm Pray-Mah) = A call for universal love

Om Shanti (Ohm Shawn-tee) = Invocation to eternal peace

So Hum (So Hum) = I am that Self within

O Wakan Tanka (Wah-Kahn Tahn-Kah) = Great Spirit

Before you rush to the drugstore to buy an over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medication, try one a natural sleep remedies. “These are safer and have fewer side effects than OTC medications,” says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic and medical director of the National Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers.

Hopefully, these few natural pieces of the puzzle will help you to fall and stay asleep.

It’s surprising how much the diagnosis of depression can dictate our medical care today. The number of retirement-age Americans taking at least three psychiatric drugs more than doubled between 2004 and 2013. This is despite almost half of them having no mental health diagnosis on record, per a recent paper in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Geriatric medical organizations have long warned against over-prescribing to older people, who are more susceptible to common side effects of psychotropic drugs, such as dizziness and confusion. These symptoms lead to further decline in cognition, falls, and increased anxiety. These neuroleptics and antidepressants frequently make people look and act apathetic, zombie-like as if they’ve been lobotomized — even at moderate or low doses.

What’s really going on?

For more than 20 years, the American Geriatrics Society has published “Beers Criteria” which lists dozens of potentially inappropriate drugs and their mutual interactions. Unfortunately, inappropriate prescribing in older people is even more common than previously thought according to a recent study.

Prescription rates of drugs like antidepressants, sleeping pills and painkillers nonetheless generally increased in older people, previous studies have found. The new report captures one important fact; the rise in so-called poly-pharmacy — three drugs or more — is happening in primary care.

“I was stunned to see this, that despite all the talk about how poly-pharmacy is bad for older people, this rate has doubled,” said Dr. Dilip Jeste, a professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego.

The research team, led by Dr. Donovan T. Maust of the University of Michigan and Dr. Mark Olfson of Columbia University, analyzed data from annual government surveys of office-based doctors. The team focused on office visits by people 65 or older that resulted in the prescribing of at least three of a list of psychiatric, sleep and pain medications like Risperidone, Valium, Prozac, OxyContin and Ambien. It found that the overall number of such visits increased to 3.68 million in 2013 from 1.5 million in 2004 — nearly a 150 percent increase, partly because the population is aging but mostly because of an increased percentage of prescribing multiple medications.

So what is the answer? It is very important an older adult have an advocate who is well versed in the dangers of poly-pharmacology and is aware of alternatives that are safer and effective. The RN Life Care Managers of Elder Maze Solutions fit this profile and provide this service to any interested client.

Natural Ways to Treat Depression

There are a number of safe and effective ways to address anxiety and depression that do not involve drugs. Let’s take a look at a few natural methods to consider before reaching for and taking another pill.

1. Diet

Eat real organic food, as close to its original source as possible. Avoid all processed foods, sugar (particularly fructose), grains and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Try eating a Gluten free diet as gluten has been directly linked to symptoms of depression. When you consume foods high in carbohydrates and sugars this leads to excessive insulin release. This starts a hypoglycemic cycle that can lend to agitation, anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

Reducing gut inflammation is imperative when addressing mental health issues. Increase consumption of traditionally fermented and cultured foods which can reduce gut inflammation, promote a healthy gut flora, and add healthy probiotics. Consume food such as sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, and miso soup. New research from Lund University in Sweden has shown that certain types of intestinal bacteria can accelerate the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Get adequate Vitamin B12

Vitamin B-12 and other B vitamins play a role in producing brain chemicals that affect mood and other brain functions. Low levels of B-12 and other B vitamins such as vitamin B-6 and folate may be linked to depression.

When you get older, the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid. This acid releases vitamin B12 from your food. If you’re over 50, it’s safe to assume you are not absorbing vitamin B12 at an optimal level.

With the long term usage of Proton Pump inhibitors and other antacids 3/5th of the population over the age of 50 is B12 deficient.

3. Optimize your Vitamin D levels

Vitamin D is very important for your mood. Your body actually makes most of its vitamin D from sunshine; vitamin D levels have been shown to be the lowest during the month of February for American’s. According to one recent study, seniors who have low vitamin D levels may double their risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and were 11 times more prone to depression.

Check your Vitamin D level at least once a year. You’ll want to be within the therapeutic range of 40 to 60 ng/mL (100 to 150 nmol/L) year-round. If you cannot get sufficient sun exposure to maintain this level, taking an oral vitamin D3 supplement would be advisable. Also increase your vitamin K2 and magnesium when taking oral vitamin D.

4. Mindfulness Meditation

We can’t control our emotions, and the more that we try to stop anxiety, or sadness, or fear from coming up, the more it comes up. Mindfulness is paying precise, nonjudgmental attention to the details of our experience as it arises and subsides, doesn’t reject anything. Instead of struggling to get away from experiences we find difficult, we practice being able to be with them. We begin to realize that our thoughts and emotions are not who we are, and from this observing stance, we begin to create space for these difficult experiences to be as they are, where they already are. The amazing thing is that often, once a person stops spending all their energy on fighting how they feel, and get clear on what they really want their life to stand for, they become free to do things that really matter to them.

5. Get adequate daily exercise

Most people agree there is strong correlation between mood and exercise. However, did you know that, exercise might be an acceptable substitute for antidepressants? See this study in Health Harvard .

Exercising creates new GABA-producing neurons that help induce a natural state of calm. It also boosts your levels of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, which help buffer the effects of stress.

6. Get enough sleep

Evidence suggests that people with insomnia have a ten-fold risk of developing depression compared with those who sleep well. When you don’t get the 7-9 hours of quality sleep you need, it can heavily influence your outlook on life, energy level, motivation, and emotions. Here are some recommendations on getting a good night’s sleep.

7. Emotional Freedom Techniques (sometimes called Tapping)

Recent research has shown EFT significantly increases positive emotions, such as hope and enjoyment, and decreases negative emotional states. The basic premise is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system, which is the centerpiece of eastern medicine. When the energy in our body is flowing normally, we feel great; when it becomes stagnant or obstructed, this causes disruptions along the energy meridians. That damage leads to negative or damaging emotions which can develop into physical symptoms. Tapping with your fingers on meridian points corrects these imbalances. At the same time, tapping tunes into the underlying issue. When done properly, the emotional factors that contribute to the problem are typically released along with the energy blocks.

EFT is particularly powerful for treating stress and anxiety because it specifically targets your amygdala and hippocampus, parts of your brain that help you decide whether or not something is a threat.

Those of you who live with or work in diabetes probably know that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. However, did you know 1 out of 5 people in the United States have diabetes? Diabetes is also the leading cause of disability and death in the United States. Here at Elder Maze Solutions, we want to provide the tools you need to decrease your risk of diabetes or diabetes to ensure a healthy life.

The importance of a diagnosis

First things first is knowing the importance of the diagnosis. Regular visits to your primary provider can help you stay on top of your health including catching diabetes to make an early diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, don’t let it discourage you from living a happy and healthy life.

What changes should you make this month?

Get more exercise – You can improve your health and lower your risk of diabetes by increasing your exercise. You can increase your exercise by doing simple things like taking the stairs instead of taking the elevator.

Sleep a little more – You can also improve your health by getting more sleep. Not getting enough sleep can increase insulin resistance. This means your body requires more insulin to get glucose into your cells. Lack of sleep will lead to higher blood glucose levels which can cause diabetes.

Eat healthier – Consume more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Maintain a diet that consists of less sugar and salt. It’s also important to eat three meals a day at a regular mealtime.

Do you need help paying for your insulin?

If you need help paying for your insulin, you may be able to get Medicare drug coverage. Open Enrollment for this coverage starts 1/1/2021. You can visit Medicare.gov/plan-compare to find a plan that offers this savings in your state.

For the millions of us living with diabetes, it’s a chance to tell our stories and awaken the world. Share your story today at https://eldermaze.com/contact/

Coconut oil is composed predominantly of medium chain triglycerides (MCT). MCT oil is an easy way to get large concentrations of certain MCT. It usually contains C8, C10 or a combination of the two. The theory behind MCT potentially improving cognition is based on ketone bodies produced by metabolized coconut oil. Neurons in the brain use these ketone bodies for fuel, thus improving cognitive function.

The Results of MCT:

Definitive science and clinical evidence for using coconut oil is related to findings noted on PET scans in people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The brain of these individuals with AD demonstrated a decreased absorption of glucose (the food for the brain). These same PET scan show that areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer’s readily take up ketones as an alternative brain fuel source. MCT produce ketones, which act as an alternative energy source for the brain and can therefore improve brain function. Whereas ketogenic diets can be useful for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, it is difficult to get them to adhere to this restricted diet.

Coconut oil, which is is 60% medium chain triglycerides (MCT) can serve as an alternative energy source in the brain. As stated before, they produce a ketogenic effect. Patients with memory impairment showed significant improvement in memory after receiving oral supplementation with MCT. The treatment produced higher ketone levels in the blood (Reger et al., 2004). Higher plasma levels of ketones like β-hydroxybutyrate directly correlate with higher performance in memory scores during this study (Reger et al., 2004). Adding coconut oil or MCT oil to the diet has the advantage of being cost effective, easy to implement, socially acceptable and generally safe from significant side effects. Quality MCT oils contain either 100% caprylic acid (C8), 100% capric acid (C10) or a combination of the two.

The Research on MCT:

Dr. Mary Newport popularized the use of both coconut oil and MCT oil for treating Alzheimer’s disease. As a neonatal physician, she was familiar with the use of MCT oil in newborns. When her husband developed early-onset Alzheimer’s, she fed him MCT oil and coconut oil with some success. She’s now an outspoken advocate for the use of MCT and coconut oil for neurological disorders beyond dementia including Down syndrome, ALS, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s. Here is an interview with Dr. Mary and Steve Newport about Steve’s recovery from Alzheimer’s disease by eating Coconut Oil.

In the following video, you can listen to a panel discussion with five medical doctors regarding the problem of insulin resistance and the damaging effects of a high carbohydrate diet on Alzheimer’s disease, and how coconut oil can be effective in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

The Take Away:

Neuro-cognitive diseases have devastating effects and are incurable. There is a the lack of therapeutic alternatives and the relative absence of effective medications and adverse drug effects. These issues give us an urgent need for effective therapies. The five drugs currently used for treatment are supportive or palliative rather than curative or disease-modifying therapies. These drugs do not appear to alter the final outcome of the disease either. MCT offer neuro-protective benefits for a wide range of diseases including dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury. “While more research certainly needs to be done in this area as well, I see no reason not to incorporate coconut oil in your diet, or the diet of a loved one who is exhibiting symptoms of brain degeneration. Coconut oil has so many profound health benefits; it’s not going to do any harm.”— Dr. Mercola

Magnesium deficiencies are known as the “invisible deficiency” because it’s so commonly overlooked. With the health benefits of magnesium ranging from improved cognition, reducing stress, improving depression, along with better sleep, pain relief and heart health, it’s easy to understand why taking magnesium is a promising strategy to vibrant health and disease prevention. “New clinical research results show magnesium is effective at addressing symptoms and is safer and easier on the wallet than prescription therapies,” reports Science Daily, echoing the reporting of Natural News from over a decade ago.

Interesting Magnesium Health Benefits

This important mineral is deficient in the soil from which the food we eat grows. Chemical fertilizers and modern intensive farming and agricultural trends have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from our soils.

One general rule of thumb to determine the need for a daily intake of magnesium is approximately 3-4 mg per pound of bodyweight. For a 200 lb. male, this would equate to 600 mg to 800 mg per day. Roughly 75% of U.S. adults consume less than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium.

50% of cases of a deficiency in this mineral may go unrecognized due to statistical errors in serum magnesium testing.

The body absorbs only about 20-50% of magnesium intake. Magnesium oxide, the most common form of supplement fro this nutrient found in drug stores, only has a 4% absorption rate. Magnesium chloride has much higher rates of absorption due to their higher solubility in water.

Over three dozen prescription medications interfere with absorption of this mineral and retention in the body, including cortisones, antibiotics, diuretics, allergy and asthma medications, and chemotherapy treatments.

The natural process of aging and the individual’s state of health reduces stomach acid levels and is associated with reduced absorption. Consequently, the gut becomes less efficient at absorbing magnesium and the kidneys become less efficient at retaining it with age. Transdermal (topical) absorption of this mineral addresses all of these concerns.

By understanding the causes of a lack of magnesium, it’s possible for each of us to make proactive individual decisions on whether to supplement this commonly deficient essential mineral.

1. Your heart needs it

Magnesium regulates the contractile ability of the heart muscle. A decreased level of this mineral in the heart muscle may predispose a person to coronary spasms. It also decreases coagulation and acts as a calcium channel blocker, thereby helping the heart to pump more effectively.

2. Your lungs need it

Magnesium also has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscle in your lungs. In addition, it may be helpful in relaxing the smooth muscle of the bronchioles (improving asthma) and the arterioles (lowering blood pressure).

3. MG ++ helps with Depression

“A magnesium deficiency magnifies depression and stress. Serotonin, the feel good brain chemical that is boosted artificially by some medications, depends on magnesium for its production and function. A person that is going through a stressful period without sufficient magnesium can set up a deficit that, if not corrected, can linger, causing depression and further health problems.” Carolyn Dean, MD, ND

4. Slows aging

While natural aging is a healthy process, accelerated aging has been noted to be a feature of magnesium deficiency, especially evident in the context of long space-flight missions where low levels are associated with cardiovascular aging over 10 times faster than occurs on earth. Supplementation of this mineral has been shown to reverse age-related neuro-endocrine and sleep EEG changes in humans.

5. Helps you cope with stress

The more stressed a person becomes the more magnesium is lost from the body. Furthermore, if you are deficient, your heart rate and sympathetic nervous system is sent into overdrive, causing you to feel anxious and stressed.

6. Supports healthy brain function

Magnesium is a neuro-protective agent. A deficiency causes over-excitory brain patterns, which damages the neurons, eventually leading to cell death. In the brain, that is not easy to fix. Studies show that it also protects against neurological deficit after brain injury. Increasing Mg2++ levels in the brain could represent a promising strategy to minimize or even prevent cognitive deficits that take place with age.

7. Helps you get a better night’s sleep

Magnesium has a calming effect on your body’s nervous system and relaxes the muscles, which in turn will help you to fall asleep easier. A deficiency is also sometimes responsible for the nervousness that prevents sleep as well as restless legs syndrome. It may also improve the length and quality of slow wave sleep. Experts such as Dr Mark Hyman consider it “The most powerful relaxation mineral available.”
